With fifteen police motorcycle police units and three fire trucks leading the way for an estimated seven hundred and fifty motorcyclist the Second Annual Firefighters Memorial Ride was again a roaring success. The event began at the Western Reserve Fire Museum and Educational Center located at the intersection of Carnegie and Ontario, in downtown Cleveland Ohio across from Jacobs Field. Firefighters from all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois and New York began to arrive at 10:00 AM. Motorcyclist representing various firefighters motorcycle clubs such as the Red Knights, Ax Men, Warhogs and many others. The event is intended to honor those men and women who have worked as firefighters, EMS and Rescue Workers both past and present. Each rider and passengers paid twenty dollars a person to ride in the event with the net proceeds being donated to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund. With the cooperation of Cleveland Harley Davidson Sales Company, Southeast Harley Davidson, Western Reserve Harley Davidson and Lake Erie/ Elyria Harley Davidson, there were approximately five hundred and fifty tickets sold in advanced of the ride. With the temperatures reaching near ninety degrees on Sunday May 28th an additional 400 tickets were sold the day of the event. This year the riders would ride eastward through Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, University Heights, South Euclid, Lyndhurst, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield, Willoughby Heights, Highland Heights, Richmond Heights, Euclid , Braternal and conclude the ride at Voinovich Park.At 1:00 PM sharp the sound of police motorcycle sirens and fire-truck bells and sirens began the procession which would wind its way fifty miles past fourteen different fire department houses in the various communities through which we were riding. Many of the communities provided additional police support to block every intersection on the fifty mile ride, so that the riders never had to put their foot down the entire ride. Due to the length of the procession ever intersection was closed for the riders for approximately fifteen minutes. People waved from their cars, homes, businesses and most importantly from the fourteen different fire department houses that we rode past. With hook and latter fire trucks raised upward and flags waiving in the air we saluted the many firefighters, EMS and rescue workers on duty that day.As we finally arrived at Voinovich Park at 3:15 PM we rode under two hook and latter fire trucks with a fifty foot American flag stretched between them. What a glorious way to conclude an excellent ride. As the motorcyclist began to enjoy the pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and refreshments, Jim Mantel of WGAR was the master of ceremonies at the 4:00 PM ceremony, highlighted by the Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipes and Drums performance. The names were read of the suburban fallen firefighters who have given their lives as firefighters and a moment of silence was observed for all firefighters including the 106 firefighters lost during 2005 nationally, the 343 firefighters that lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and Ohios 108 Fallen military Heros. The event organizers indicated that the event generated $10,000 for the Firefighters Memorial Fund, which was outstanding. The first 750 tickets sold included a free tee shirt and food at the conclusion of the ride.As the motorcyclist began to leave Voinovich Park they again looked forward to the Third Annual Firefighters Memorial Ride on Sunday May 27, 2007.
