It affects essential human behaviors including: social interaction, communication, emotions, imagination, self-regulation, and the ability to establish relationships with others. Although the cause of this condition has not yet been determined, it is clear that the disability affects brain development. It is estimated that autism occurs in as many as 1 in 150 individuals in the United States (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), and 1 in 81 children in Minnesota (US Department of Special Education). Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls and knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries.
