PKU is detected by the heel prick test given to your baby 24 hours after they are born.PKU is a rare inherited metabolic disorder in which infants born and are untreated will eventually lead to mental retardation and neurological disorders. Currently, the only effective treatment is for individuals to adhere to a strict, low protein diet, consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables and costly low protein medical foods. Individuals with PKU cannot have meat, fish, poultry, dairy, nuts, eggs, flour and baked goods that contain gluten. All food items eaten by a person with PKU should be weighed and monitored to ensure that the PHE levels are within the appropriate range. Individuals with PKU must also have their PHE levels monitored with periodic blood tests, drink a supplementing formula and meet with Dr's and Dieticians, their entire lives. Money from this run will buy care packages for families at Children's Hospital who just found out their child has this disorder or any other genetic/metabolic condition. These families are often totally unaware of this disorder and are extremely confused and distraught. This care package will provide these families with the tools that they need to begin this diet.
