Worldwide Motorcycle Awareness Ride (# 15645)

23-May-2010 (Sunday)

Worldwide Motorcycle Awareness Ride May is Motorcycle Safety month and on May 23rd, riders all over the globe will be riding to raise awareness. All riders know that more needs to be done to raise motorist awareness of the millions of motorcycles sharing U.S. roads each year. Many communities across the nation have experienced crashes resulting in serious rider injury or fatality due to inattentive, careless or unaware drivers. On March 25, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona, four riders were killed and five others seriously injured when they were hit from behind by a large truck while stopped at a traffic light. The truck driver, by his own admission, was not paying attention, Instead, he was shuffling with paperwork. This sad event has touched the hearts of many and reinforced the importance of motorcycle awareness initiatives. There have been numerous motorcyclist fatalities right here in the Central part of Missouri. The victims of the Phoenix wreck were members of “Phoenix MC Kruzers” (PMCK) and “Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group” (PMRG) Meetup Groups. In support of motorcycle awareness and of PMCK and PMRG in honoring the fallen riders and their families, ride groups across the nation are being asked to ride on the same day in May.Not only did the biker community loose brothers and sisters that day, but so did the meetup community. Central Missouri Riders meetup group will be hosting a ride to the Arch for Awareness in participation with the Worldwide Motorcycle Awareness Ride. We will be joined by other local riding groups including The St Louis Motorcycle Riders meetup group and the NEMO riders meetup group out of Kirksville, Mo. Riders are being asked to join us at any one of the meetup spots or anywhere along the route. They are being asked to wear brightly colored shirts such as lime green, bright yellow or safety orange. We will be deviating from our normal back roads and riding the populated Missouri Highways where we will be seen.As the weather improves, more and more motorcyclist are hitting the Missouri roads. With that in mind, drivers of all vehicles need to be extra attentive and pay attention to the task at hand, driving. Put down the cell phone, stop fiddling with the radio, and don't shuffle with paperwork. But pay attention to what they are doing. It is our hopes that this Awareness ride will help remind motorist that we are on the road. They don't have to like us, but they do have to share the road with us.The following is a list of meetup spots and times:OSAGE BEACH, MO HyVee parking lot Hwy 54.
