The Quail Motorcycle Gathering is not your typical motorcycle event, from the luxurious Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club location, to the actual physical spot which is right on a golf course, to the All American BBQ lunch, and the $60 ticket price per person.
I first became aware of the Quail Motorcycle Gathering in 2009 and attended it for its first time, I was pretty impressed the first time (see the 2009 Quail Motorcycle Gathering Review), and this time is no different.
Normally when you think about the average motorcycle event, you think about loud bikes, half naked women, and burly bikers with long beards and beer bellies. The only common aspect that the Quail Motorcycle Gathering has with these other motorcycle events is the actual motorcycles, everything else is a complete 180 degrees in the opposite direction.
First the motorcycles: most bikes at this motorcycle event are old bikes but don't let the term "old" mislead you, these bikes look newer than new. It is obvious that who ever own these bikes have some extra change in their pockets, these bikes are simply immaculate. I did see some cool choppers, newer Harley bikes, and some other creations, but most of the motorcycles at this show are over 20 years old, and I wish I could look that good when I'm half these motorcycles age.
Second the location: the motorcycles are spread over a neatly manicured golf course, from the looks of it, someone had to crawl on their knees and cut every single blade of grass individually with a surgeon knife.
Then there is the setup: as you walk around and look at the motorcycles you can take breaks on the many shaded benches that are spread around the grounds. And even these are not simply a bench with a sun umbrella, every rest-bench area has its own props, some has hay bales, and some flower pots or some other props.
And then there is the food: for lunch the Quail served ribs, chicken, corn on a cub, and my favorite...sliced strawberries with one of the best-made whipped cream that I ever ate (yes whipped cream...I already said that this is not your average motorcycle event). Although I was a little disappointed by the quality of the ribs and chicken, the food was generally ok
All in all I enjoyed the Quail Motorcycle Gathering, it is a very laid-back and a relaxed kind of a motorcycle event. Throughout the day there was a live band playing good music, people are calm and courteous, and the general atmosphere is that of a "Boston tea party" rather than your average motorcycle event.
As I said in my 2009 review of the event, every biker should attend the Quail Motorcycle Gathering at least once, at $60 a head it is a little costly but it is so different than what I am used to in terms of motorcycle events, that I have to recommend it to all my fellow bikers.
If I had to create a slogan for this event, it would be: "The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, where motorcycle events go to take a luxury vacation".
